Telehealth Services with Dr. Frank

Although I have retired from in-person private practice, I have some availability for telehealth services (video, phone, text, and email). Keep in mind that not all situations are best treated through telehealth. I will review your situation with you prior to scheduling your first appointment and determine whether the services I provide are appropriate for you. The following is some information regarding treatment.

Telehealth services are limited to my specialty area of anxiety and stress-related disorders. I use the model of brief, intermittent therapy. This is different from traditional therapy in that after an evaluation I develop a treatment plan that you pursue with my direction and review as needed. What that means is that therapy is scheduled based on the amount of assistance you need to follow the plan.

The form of telehealth may include video conferencing, phone calls, texting, or emailing depending on the goals of therapy and the assistance you need. The brief, intermittent model of therapy can be more effective with less professional contact because sessions are scheduled based on need instead of a routine schedule. Using this model with the CBT methods means that you should expect a great deal of homework so be prepared to spend the necessary time on treatment.

To request services:

If you are interested in receiving services, you must meet the criteria described in the following questions. Once you have met the criteria, complete the Initial Contact Form.

  • At the time of service, will you be located in one of the states listed below?
  • Do you have an anxiety disorder or stress-related disorder?
  • Have you practiced the guided imagery and/or the mindfulness audios on this site regularly?
  • Do you have an Android device to use the Excel At Life apps? If not, you will need to purchase one. (Tablets can be used with a wifi connection - you don't need a data plan for the device.)
  • Are you using the resources on the website and/or the methods in the Excel At Life apps routinely?

The purpose of meeting the criteria is that many people will not need personalized services if they use the resources provided by Excel At Life. However, it can be difficult to know which methods and resources are best for a given situation. So, if you find that you need assistance with the resources, I can help by developing a plan, reviewing your progress, and making adjustments as needed.

Population served by Dr. Frank:

  • Adults
  • Individuals
  • Anxiety/stress
  • Panic
  • Social Anxiety
  • Phobias (such as fear of flying)
  • Agoraphobia
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Behavior
  • Perfectionism
  • Generalized Anxiety
  • Depression (accompanying anxiety disorder without suicidal ideation)

Therapeutic process:

I provide mindfulness-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (MCBT). Prior to therapy I encourage you to use the apps and audios I provide on this website. Therapy itself will address what methods you have tried, what helped and what didn't, and how to personalize the approach for your situation.

With the anxiety disorders I will design a treatment plan to help confront and manage the anxiety. Using the breathing, guided imagery, and mindfulness methods prior to treatment will allow therapy to be more time-limited and to focus on the aspects of treatment that need more support (such as cognitive restructuring and exposure therapy).

Frequency of sessions is based upon individual need and can vary throughout the course of therapy. In addition, sessions can include email or texts according to what best meets your needs.

Therapy will include:

  • Completing history and symptom questionnaires prior to the first session
  • An initial evaluation of one to two hours reviewing the history of the problem and prior therapy
  • The development of a treatment plan
  • Assistance with following the treatment plan
  • Follow-up sessions to assess treatment plan outcomes and to address changes to the treatment plan
  • A final plan to continue applying methods that helped

No diagnostic services provided:

Over the years of my practice I have become disillusioned with the demand for diagnoses in our society. In mental health, most diagnoses are just a description of symptoms and behavior and not true, specific illnesses. Due to the demand to have a diagnosis by the insurance industry, psychiatric diagnostic criteria have expanded to such a degree that nearly 50% of people can be diagnosed with a mental illness sometime in their lifetime. As a result the medical model of treating people has become predominant which requires thinking of a person as "ill" or "abnormal" rather than as a person who needs assistance with resolving a problem.

Although I recognize the importance of obtaining a diagnosis to receive treatments such as medication, I no longer wish to participate in labeling people. I will focus therapy on behaviors and symptoms that prevent you from pursuing a satisfying life. If this doesn't work for you, I will recommend that you see a more appropriate mental health professional.

As a result, there are several services I don't provide. If you require any of these services it is best to contact a different provider:

  • Providing diagnoses to insurance companies. This means that services will not be covered even if you have out-of-network benefits.
  • Disability claims.
  • Obtaining educational or work modifications based on disability.
  • Court testimony or legal documents requiring diagnostic evaluation.

$240 per hour spent in direct contact or indirect services (text, email, meetings with other professionals, etc). Instead of the traditional 50-minute hour, my services are provided based upon need. Sometimes 30 minutes may be sufficient or an email follow-up to help with motivation or a brief phone call to provide direction. Time is tracked based on 5-minute increments.

I do not accept insurance. This provides you with several benefits:

  • Complete privacy and confidentiality
  • High quality services focused on your needs, not on whether you meet certain diagnostic criteria
  • Ability to structure sessions in way that works best for your situation such as longer or shorter session length and use of texts and email.
  • Therapy is not dictated by the limitations of an insurance plan and non-therapist gate-keepers
  • Tends to be more effective due to greater personal investment and motivation
